The Lagos State Commissioner for Agriculture, Toyin Suarau,
on Sunday, disclosed that some imported contaminated poultry products which
were seized and buried by the Nigeria Customs Service in Badagry area of the
state, have been exhumed by some people with the aim of selling them.
Suarau is now warning residents of the state against
the consumption of poultry produce that are in circulation at present as they
pose serious health risks.
The Commissioner made this disclosure yesterday when
officials of the National Orientation Agency, on the directive of the Federal
Government, visited him as part of the sensitisation of Lagosians on the
dangers of consuming the contaminated food and to draw the attention of the
public to the dangers inherent in buying and consuming these poultry produce.
Sarau also said among the contaminated produce, were
chicken and turkey, adding that the products had been laced with chemicals such
as formalin, which is poisonous and could lead to slow death.
He added that the poisonous produce was not as
nutritious as freshly processed poultry meat because imported poultry meat had
been preserved for months and years with dangerous chemicals.
